5 tips to achieve good manual handling techniques
Many workplaces require employees to undertake manual handling tasks as part of their routine work. All employers should be aware of the manual handling legislation and guidelines in their State or territory in order to minimise risks associated with handling and ensure a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. We outline 5 manual handling tips to achieve a safer and more productive workplace.
What are examples of manual handling injuries?
Poor handling of manual handling equipment is one of the biggest causes of workplace injuries. Musculoskeletal disorders (or MSDs) triggered by manual handling are a large contributor to workplace absenteeism.
Common injuries include:
- Pulled muscles and strains
- Back injuries
- Damage from dropping loads onto feet
- Trapping hands between loads and fixtures
- Falls when trying to move loads
Manual handling tip 1: Plan your lift
Ensure the object is light enough to lift, steady, and unlikely to shift or move. Remove obstructions and ensure your route is clear. Will help be required? Is there manual handling equipment that could be used to aid the lift? There’s a big difference between what people can lift and what they can lift in a safe manner. If uncertain, seek advice or get help.
Manual handling tip 2: Keep your feet apart
Stand with your feet apart, giving a stable base for lifting. Your leading leg should be as far forward as is comfortable, pointing in the direction you want to go. There is no need to stay rigid; move your feet if you need to keep yourself steady.
Manual handling tip 3: Ensure a good posture
When lifting from a low level, bend your knees and ensure your back is straight. A small bending of the back, hips and knees is preferable to either completely flexing the back or squatting. Do not bend the back any further while lifting the object. This can happen if the legs begin to straighten before lifting the object. Do not twist when you lift – especially while the back is bent. Hold your shoulders level and always facing the same direction as the hips.
Manual handling tip 4: Maintain a firm grip
When holding onto something, a hook grip is less strenuous than keeping your fingers straight. If you need to change your grip as you proceed to lift the object, do this as effortlessly as possible.
Manual handling tip 5: Hug the load close to the body
Keeping the load close to the body will helpyou make a stronger and more solid lift than gripping the load tightly with the hands only. Grip the load close to your body for as long as possible, with the heaviest side of the load towards you.
