Lithium-ion battery solution for operational efficiency
Lithium-ion battery solution for operational efficiency
Pioneer work with the lithium battery began in 1912 under G.N. Lewis but it was not until the early 1970s when the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became commercially available. Today, lithium-ion is the fastest growing and most promising battery chemistry. Here’s how this exciting new technology can boost operational efficiency in your workplace.
Lithium-ion batteries explained
Lithium-ion batteries feature secondary cell construction. This means that they can be recharged hundreds of times and are more stable. They tend to have a higher energy density, voltage capacity and lower self-discharge rate than other rechargeable batteries. This makes for better power efficiency as a single cell has longer charge retention than other battery types, including AGM and SLA batteries. Under most conditions, lithium has 10 times the cycle life of SLA. This brings the cost per cycle of lithium lower than SLA, meaning you will have to replace a lithium battery less often.
Lithium-ion batteries: why they are better
- Longer cycle life. AGM batteries are generally recommended to only be discharged to 50% of their capacity to maximise their cycle life. A lithium-ion battery, on the other hand, is not affected much by depth of discharge so it boasts a much longer cycle life.
- Safer. Lithium-ion batteries are tolerant to high temperatures and abuse such as overcharging, short circuit and penetration. As a result, the risk of fire is extremely low, even under harsh circumstances.
- Lower maintenance. Unlike AGM and SLA batteries, no memory and no scheduled cycling is required to prolong lithium-ion battery life.
- Cheaper in the long run. The extra efficiency of lithium-ion batteries means you can potentially spend less per kilowatt-hour of capacity over the lifespan of the battery.
Service Assist: revolutionising workplaces
At Service Assist, we are passionate about producing the best manual handling products and equipment in the world. We are looking at implementing lithium batteries into our products over the next few months. This is exciting news – not only for our team at Service Assist but for all our clients who rely on manual handling products and equipment. Existing motorised trolleys can be converted to lithium batteries if required.
